Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is characterised by a great linguistic and cultural diversity. In this course, the focus will be on the diversity in architecture and its meanings within the different local societies, for the nation-state as well as for anthropological studies in the region. Its aim is to create an awareness that architecture is an important and complex part of material culture which not only represents socio-economic status and ethnic-cultural identity as well as socio-cultural values and beliefs.
Topics:
• Introduction to the history and cultures of Indonesia
• Introduction to the anthropology of architecture
• Anthropological approaches applied to the architecture of Indonesia:
• Traditional vernacular architecture
• Modern architecture
• Urban architecture
• The village and the city

Assessment and permitted materials

• Essays (plagiarism check via Moodle)
• Oral presentations
• Participation in discussions, working groups etc.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Presence and active participation in class
• Timely and satisfactory completion of all tasks and homeworks

The lecturer can invite students to a grade-relevant discussion about partial achievements. Partial achievements that are obtained by fraud or plagiarized result in the non-evaluation of the course (entry 'X' in certificate). From winter term 2019/20 the plagiarism software 'Turnitin' will be used for courses with continuous assessment.
