Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course, which is held in English language, focuses on examples of contemporary mass media and popular culture that transported the goals of European modern overseas colonialism and sought to communicate them to broad sections of the respective populations in the colonizing countries. With the help of books, nespapers and magazins, photographs, collector's cards (trade cards), posters and ephemera, a picture is to emerge that illustrates that colonialism used a variety of media to achieve its questionable goals. Prejudices, clichés and stereotypes become more understandable and forms of exoticism and xenophobia easier to explain.
Assessment and permitted materials
A short presentation on an assigned topic in the seminar is mandatory, as well as its written elaboration as a 10-12 page seminar paper. Active participation in the seminar is important and part of the evaluation.
