Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We live in a time of images. The "iconic turn" or "pictorial turn" has made it clear to everyone what significance images have in today's fast-moving and stimulus-flooded world. Consequently, image analysis and image research in general are of central importance. Ethnohistory deals with various types of sources, one of which is image sources. These are dealt with in particular in the course and questions of form, image design and content are addressed using examples. Ethnohistory can therefore be the theory-based and method-generating sub-science of cultural anthropology that significantly helps to analyze images and interpret their historical and recent significance.

Assessment and permitted materials

After several introductory double lessons by the course instructor, the participants in this Vorlesungsübung must devote themselves to a given topic, which can be selected from a list of suggestions. For a short presentation in the seminar, this topic should be dealt with as part of a short research project. Any specialist literature used is permitted and welcome.
For the overall grade, 1) active participation in the seminar and 2) the short presentation on the chosen topic are required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For the overall grade, 1) active participation in the seminar and 2) the short presentation on the chosen topic are required. The overall grade results from both parts, whereby the short presentation is indispensable.
For a positive assessment, 50% of the points must be achieved. 16 points are awarded for the 2 partial performances according to the ratio: 8:8.
The assessment is based on a points system: 16 points are awarded. 0-8 points = insufficient; 9-10 points = sufficient; 11-12 points = satisfactory; 13-14 points = good; 15-16 points = very good.

Examination topics

1.) course content;
2.) Articles and book excerpts that are explicitly referenced (and partly made available on the moodle platform).
In the course, articles and books on the topic will be discussed, recommended and some of them will be named as examination material. On the moodle platform set up for this lecture, pdf's of articles will be made available, as well as the slides of the Power-Point presentations used.
