Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Ethnohistory as a theory and method - decisive aspects can be found for both - has a tradition on Viennese soil, as it originated and developed here. The cooperation between ethnology and history has always been of central importance here, and it was here that the main impetus for this cooperation came from. Based on the fundamental concepts and theoretical considerations, the course discusses the essential elements of ethnohistorical work within ethnology and cultural and social anthropology. Together with the students, the advantages of ethnohistorical work are discussed on the basis of specific topics and examples, with a particular focus on various source genres that are of central importance for the acquisition of information.

Assessment and permitted materials

After several introductory double lessons by the course instructor, the participants in this Vorlesungsübung must devote themselves to a given topic, which can be selected from a list of suggestions. For a short presentation in the seminar, this topic should be dealt with as part of a short research project. Any specialist literature used is permitted and welcome.
For the overall grade, 1) active participation in the seminar and 2) the short presentation on the chosen topic are required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For the overall grade, 1) active participation in the seminar and 2) the short presentation on the chosen topic are required. The overall grade results from both parts, whereby the short presentation is indispensable.
For a positive assessment, 50% of the points must be achieved. 16 points are awarded for the 2 partial performances according to the ratio: 8:8.
The assessment is based on a points system: 16 points are awarded. 0-8 points = insufficient; 9-10 points = sufficient; 11-12 points = satisfactory; 13-14 points = good; 15-16 points = very good.

Examination topics

1) active participation in the seminar and
2) the short presentation
