Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the fundamental questions and the basic tools of the calculus of variations. Material will cover the Direct Method, Euler-Lagrange equations, convexity, and relaxation. Applications of the theory and, time permitting, more advanced topics will also be presented.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be weekly assignments (written), a mid term exam (written), a final exam (written or oral).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students are required to master the basic content of the course and to be able to replicate some technical passages of proofs and applications.

Examination topics

The content of the lectures, with specific emphasis on a selection of topics which will be specified during the course.

Notes to the lectures will be regularly distributed via the dedicated moodle page.
