Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will discuss the book "Discrete Mathematics. Elementary and Beyond" by László Lovász, József Pelikán and Katalin Vesztergombi, published in 2003 by Springer, Berlin a. o. Excerpt from the Content: Combinatorial Tools, Binomial Coefficients and Pascal's Triangle, Fibonacci Numbers, Combinatorial Probability, Integers, Divisors, and Primes, Graphs, Trees, Combinatorics in Geometry, Euler's Formula, Coloring Maps and Graphs, Finite Geometries, Codes, Cryptography. Hence, in this seminar we focus on applications except from analysis. In doing so the mathematical basic practices proving and problem solving will be in the center of our interest.
The book (in German and English) can be inspected in the instructor's
office.

Assessment and permitted materials

To give a lecture and participate in the discussions of the other presentations, compulsory attendance

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To present objectively correct a certain mathematical topic prepared in a didactical way. This means among other things, that questions from the audience or from the instructor are answered competently. Furthermore, difficulties in the comprehenison of the listeners should be foreseen and moderated, maybe actually avoided by the way of the presentation.

Examination topics

Presentations given by the students, discussions of the presentations, remarks of the instructor
