Aims, contents and method of the course

This course primarily centers on the examination of the genealogical structure within asexual populations. Driven by its wide-ranging utility in fields like population dynamics, including population genetics and epidemiology, significant progress has emerged in this domain over the past two decades. The course's overarching goal is to impart an understanding of these sophisticated concepts, spanning from general branching processes to coalescent theory. Moreover, in addition to this mathematical exploration, we will delve into several models that can be decoded utilizing this approach.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course will have a strong emphasis on fundamental principles within the field of Probability Theory : (1) limiting laws (Law of large numbers, central limit theorem) (2) stochastic processes (random walks, discrete and continuous time Markov chains, basic knowledge on Brownian motion)
