Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is aimed at being an introduction to methods from modern
symplectic geometry and its applications to time-frequency analysis and to
quantum mechanics in phase space.
Besides a key role in physics and engineering, symplectic geometry is found
increasingly to play an important role in mathematics --pure or applied.
"Symplectization", as V.I. Arnol'd calls it, has already taken place in
much of mathematical physics, in particular in Hamiltonian mechanics and
its refinement, quantum mechanics. In this course we will develop the main
techniques of symplectic geometry needed to understand and be able to use
this branch of mathematics and acquire a working knowledge of it. Some open
problems belonging to the thriving field of symplectic topology and its
possible applications to quantum mechanics will be briefly discussed.
