Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Mathematical Writing: ``Mathematical research consists of one percent inspiration and 99 perspiration''. Writing mathematics is an essential part of doing mathematics, and good writing is an important professional skill. The writing of your thesis or your first paper may be a painful process. Most of us have learned how to prove a theorem, but few of us have learned how to write a proof. In this seminar we will discuss some basic principles of mathematical writing.

The discussion will cover general principles (organization, aspects of an introduction, proofreading, consistency, etc.) as well as fine details (how to formulate a theorem, phrase structure in English, questions of style).

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation, visible progress in the writing of a thesis.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This seminar is mainly addressed, but not limited, to the members of the IK (Initiativkollegs) who are to finish their thesis soon. This seminar is an experiment, since it is not clear how writing can be taught. We may state some rules about writing, but mainly we will try to learn by example. I will try to bring examples of good and bad writing and discuss them. Ideally, we will spend most of the time on
your own mathematical texts and discuss their qualities or weaknesses.

This seminar will be held in English.
