250149 SE Seminar (Symmetries and asymmetries) (2018S)

4.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 25 - Mathematik
Continuous assessment of course work

Symmetry is omnipresent in mathematics. In this seminar, we will discuss various instances of symmetry in concrete situations, as e.g. graph-theory, particle physics, convex polytopes, differential equations, and invariant theory.

Participants are invited to propose topics on their own, and may also prepare lectures in pairs. In any case we ask you to send until end of february an e-mail to herwig.hauser@univie.ac.at so as to estimate the number of participants and to plan the presented topics in advance.

Here are a couple of topics to be discussed (the first few are already reserved):

Symmetries in Physics with extension to Supersymmetry

On nature’s lack of ambidexterity: Broken symmetries in particle physics

Antimatter and Symmetries

The First Fundamental Theorem of Invariant Theory and Noethers Bound

Symmetric Graphs, Graph-Automorphisms, Frucht's Theorem

Moduli Spaces of Billiards

Rubik's Cube

Platonic solids

Symmetries of the Hyperbolic Plane

Embedding of isometries SE_3(R) into dual Quaternions H[e], Linkages

Almost symmetry (where does symmetry almost hold?)

Normal forms (matrices, functions, vector fields, differential forms, ...)

Orthogonal polynomials and Umbral Calculus (Laguerre, Legendre, Gegenbauer, Bernoulli, Tchebychev, ...)
