Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We give an overview of modern methods for the numerical solution of Partial Differential Equations;
Some of the methods are presented in more detail,
including theoretical numerical analysis and practical implementation.

Spectral methods - FFT;
Finite Element Methods (FEM) for elliptic and parabolic problems;
Methods for advection-diffusion problems
and for the Helmholtz problem.

Operator splitting methods;
Semi-Lagrangian methods;
Fast multipole methods.

(nontrivial) boundary conditions.

Practical exercises help to illustrate / understand the methods.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam (on the blackboard) where the presentation of exercises enters the grade.
