Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture deals with didactical problems concerning variables, terms and equations in school mathematics. This field has changed considerably during the last ten years. Main topics
are: aspects of variables, cognitive models for establishing and interpreting formulas, changes from arithmetic to algebra, models for students'
mistakes, reports on several empirical investigations. The range reaches from didactical background considerations to concrete proposals for teaching.
