Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This block course which is scheduled at the beginning of the semester introduces new students to the particularities of mathematical terminology and the basic principles of mathematical argumentation. In particular, basic concepts like elementary logic, methods of proof as well as sets of numbers and algebraic structures which are used in the introductory courses Analysis 1 and Linear Algebra 1 are presented. Hence this course is intended to bridge the gap between highschool and university mathematics.
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The goal is to introduce newcomers to the basics of mathematical terminology, and to ensure a solid basis for the subsequent introductory courses in Linear Algebra and Analysis.
Examination topics
By providing suitable examples and discussing both elementary and more exciting/advanced examples and also emphasizing the value of having exact definitions, students shall be smoothly introduced into the world of (university) mathematics. The role of standard mathematical terminology and the fact that is is often a very compact and precise way of expressing seemingly complicated facts will be highlighted.
