Aims, contents and method of the course

The first part of this lecture deals with numbers and extensions of number areas. Main topics are:
- How do new numbers emerge from old numbers as objects of their own?
- Basic ideas for numbers and their changes during extensions of number areas
- Students' difficulties in different number areas (including empirical investigations)
- Practical proposals for instruction
The second part of the lecture deals with elementary algebra (variables, terms, formulas etc.). Main topics are:
- Establishing and interpreting terms and formulas
- Syntactic operations on terms and formulas
- Students' errors (including empirical investigations)
- Practical proposals for instruction
