This course discusses the theory of the energy states of molecules, and the molecular information we can obtain from their energy levels. Optical spectra (microwave, infrared, ultraviolet, ...) are used as motivation for learning and understanding, and several examples are planned.Lecture topics:
1. Molecular energy level components and timescales
2. Diatomic molecules
2.1 Rotational and vibrational states and energy levels
2.2 Electronic states, and their classification
2.3 Rotational spectra
2.4 Vibrational spectra, including fine structure
2.5 Electronic spectra
2.6 Some effects of particle spin
3. Polyatomic molecules
3.1 Rotational states and spectra (symmetric tops, principal axes)
3.2 Vibrational states and spectra (normal modes, symmetry
classifications)
3.3 Electronic spectra (if time permits)
