Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is an introduction to category theory, a theory of structures and powerful organising principles with many applications. We start with an extended discussion of the basic definitions and properties of categories and functors, with many illustrating and motivating examples from various areas of physics and mathematics. In later parts of the course we will introduce and study adjunctions, representability theorem, limits and colimits, Kan extensions, as well as other universal constructions. Again, the general theory will be accompanied by many examples in theoretical physics, topology and algebra. At least two thirds of the course will be lectures, the rest exercises classes.

Prerequisites: Familiarity with linear algebra, and a fondness for algebraic structures and conceptual aspects, nothing else. Physicists and mathematicians are equally welcome to participate.

Assessment and permitted materials

Questions and comments during and after the lectures are encouraged, regular attendance is strongly recommended. To get credits for this course, students will be asked to work out one of the exercises in written form, to present a solution of another exercise in class, and to participate in one written test at the end of the term. We will clearly formulate guidelines on how to present solutions in written and spoken form, and the lecturer will be available for consultations when solving the exercises.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To formally pass this course, one exercise solution must be made available in written form, a solution to another exercise must be presented in class, and at least 40% of the maximal score in the written test must be obtained. The written test and the exercise solutions will equally contribute to the final grade.
