Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
The course is an exam-immanent course. Registration for this course is voluntary and the ECTS associated with it is not part of the course credit for the Bachelor Physics/Astronomy/Meterology and Climate Science programs. All students registered after the deregistration deadline will be evaluated according to the assessment criteria. Attendance at the face-to-face sessions and the points achieved on the online MC tests during the face-to-face sessions will be used for assessment.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The course is graded as "attended" or "did not attend".
The criteria for "attended" are:
- Attendance at at least 85% of the face-to-face sessions
- At least 70% of the total points from all online MC tests achieved.
The criteria for "attended" are:
- Attendance at at least 85% of the face-to-face sessions
- At least 70% of the total points from all online MC tests achieved.
Examination topics
The content developed up to the online MC test date as part of the course using the work packages.

The course is designed to support first-year students in the Bachelor Physics/Astronomy/Meterology and Climate Science programs in independent learning in preparation for the StEOP2 module exam.
Students acquire/repeat the basic mathematical skills needed in the initial phase of physics studies and apply the acquired knowledge in calculus examples.Contents:
The contents include those of the lecture
"STEOP 2: Introduction to Physical Computational Methods" from winter semester 24/25,
https://ufind.univie.ac.at/de/course.html?lv=260400&semester=2024W,
in particular the following topics:
- Elementary functions and their basic properties
- Vector calculus,
- Complex numbers,
- Differentiation in one and more dimensions,
- Integration in one and more dimensions
- Ordinary differential equations of 1st and 2nd order
- Vector analysis (differentiation and integration of fields)Method:
The course will be conducted in the "inverted classroom" concept. This means that students are provided with suggestions for weekly work packages in the form of the appropriate chapters of the lecture notes as well as exercises and other learning materials in the accompanying Moodle course as an aid to independent self-study BEFORE the classroom sessions. In the attendance units, the focus is then on the application of the learned knowledge by working on computational tasks supported by the use of the Student Response System of the University of Vienna (joint calculations of the students, promotion of team building, demonstration of sample solutions by the lecturers, discussion of the exercise examples). Active participation is required for learning the application of methodological knowledge.
