Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will discuss concepts and recent experiments in quantum metrology. Specifically, we want to discuss whether quantum computation can improve the read-out of measurements, potentially enabling higher sensitivity, accuracy, or precision.

In the first few ~4 weeks, important concepts will be introduced in lectures. After that, students will present selected papers from the recent literature.

The seminar is part of a series of courses that are open to colleagues from TU Wien, ISTA, and the Universities in Innsbruck and Linz. For this reason, the seminar will be streamed on Zoom. It is, however, expected that students from the Univ. of Vienna come to the seminar in person in order to facilitate a lively discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are graded based on their paper presentation, and their contributions to the discussions. In addition, it is mandatory to read the papers that will be discussed during the exercises. Questions related to the paper must be uploaded to Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Questions must be uploaded at least 80% of the time.
Participation is mandatory at least 80% of the time.

The grade will be based on the presentation (75%) and the contributions to the discussion (25%).

Examination topics

The paper presentation should demonstrate that the student:
- Has read and understood the paper
- Has looked into the context of the paper
- Did a critical assessment of the relevance of the paper
- Put effort into explaining and presenting the paper's contents to his/her peers.

The contributions to the discussions should demonstrate an effort to understand, analyse, and assess the topic.

Reading list

Papers and Reviews will be provided at the beginning of the class.
