Aims, contents and method of the course

Advanced course in information theory.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

We will study Shannon Entropy, Data compression, Kolmogorov complexity, Channel capacities, Statistics and statistical physics.

Examination topics

The theory of information is one of the main scientific achievements of the 20th Century. We will study its basics and far reaching consequences in physics, and draw connections to quantum information theory.

Reading list

We will follow the book "Elements of information theory" of Cover and Thomas closely
