Students shall become familiar with the most important applications of crystals as well as with the basic theoretical and experimental principles of crystal growth.
Applications: As gems, in optics, as material for lasers, nonlinear optics, for holographic data storage, in electronic devices, semiconductors, piezoelectric transducers, pyroelectrics, ferroelectrics, ferromagnetics, monochromators.
General theoretical principles: Gibbs free energy, phasediagrams, single and multicompound systems, eutectic, monotectic and peritectectic systems, supersaturation, homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, growth models.
General experimental principles: Growth from the vapour by sublimation or chemical transport reaction, low pressure diamond growth.
Growth from the melt according to, Tamman-Stöber, Bridgman-Stockbarger, Nacken-Kyropolous, Czochralski, Verneuil, zone melting.
Growth from the solution by, slow cooling of the solution, by evaporation of the solvent, by thermal convection in the temperature gradient, diffusion and chemical reactions, flux growth, hydrothermal conditions, principles of diamond growth at very high pressure.
