Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is in the undergraduate studies programme 'physics teachers'. An overview on condensed matter physics and related properties of solid state materials are given. The following topics are discussed: Crystals and crystal systems, lattices, reciprocal lattice, crystal structure determination, diffraction, crystal growth, scattering and the relation to structure using x-rays and neutrons; metals: (Drude's & Sommerfeld's models), electrons in a periodic medium, Bloch-theorem, electron dynamics, Fermi surfaces, phonons, harmonic crystal, classification of solid state (binding types); Electrical properties: semiconductors, insulators. Magnetism: dia-& paramagnetism, superconductors
Methods:
  • lectuer using blackboard and slides; they are made available in advance
  • discussion with and by students
  • quizzes and polls
  • questions: any time
  • discussion forum moodle platform

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral examination: understanding solid state physics will be examined. Provided slides may be used.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimal requirement: Basic understanding of solid state physics (passed).
E.g.,: what is a crystal? How can the structure of solid matter be determined? How can electronic (Schrödinger equation), thermal, magnetic, optical, elastic properties of crystalline matter be understood and which techniques for exploring the properties can be used?
Two to four central questions will be asked:
  1. did not unterstand basic concepts=>nicht genügend
  2. got the basic concepts=>genügend
  3. +able to properly explain these concepts=>befriedigend
  4. + able to apply these concepts=>gut
  5. +going far beyond basic concepts =>sehr gut
