Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lab offers the opportunity to learn the technique and application of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) by performing a 14C dating experiment at the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA). In this way you experience working at a large scientific instrument, which is used for ultrasensitive mass spectrometry. Further by the selection of this specific AMS application, the students will learn the basic principles of the 14C dating method as well. Students also learn to evaluate, to interpret and to present scientific data.
The course consists of intoductory presentations by the students, an intense week of beam time at the accelerator, data evaluation, summary talks, preparation of a protocol, an a protocol discussion. The scheduling is fixed in the opening meeting.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course with immanent examination character. Active participation during the intensive beam time week. This includes not only the execution of the experiment but also the participation in the discussions and the recording of the experiment.) If this collaboration is not available, grade-relevant discussions are provided as a substitute.
Each participant will give a 20-minute introductory talk and
after the data analysis, a 20-minute implementation talk. Evaluation criteria for the talk will be comprehensibility, completeness, scientific correctness, and quality of presentation on the assigned topic. After completion and evaluation of the experiment, a protocol is jointly written as a group work and graded with an overall grade, each person is jointly responsible for the entire content of the protocol. Assessment criteria for the protocol are comprehensibility, completeness, scientific correctness and quality (text language, graphics).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The active participation in the experiment during the intensive week as well as the protocol count 1/4 each for the overall grade, the other half is made up of the two presentations in equal parts. For a positive grade, each partial achievement must be delivered and the weighted average of the partial grades must be positive. Each partial achievement will be graded separately, the overall grade will be the mean value according to the above weighting.
Participation in the internship units is mandatory. Absence of more than 10 percent of the total time (this corresponds to a half day) requires a formally comprehensible excuse or leads to a negative grade.

Examination topics

Practical training, literature search, presentation.

Reading list

A selection of suitable literature is available at Moodle before the start of the practical work.
