Aims, contents and method of the course

Carbohydrates:
(i) Introduction - Stereochemistry - Nomenclature
(ii) Chemical Transformations - Protecting group strategies
(iii) Glycosidation methods - Oligosaccharide synthesis
(iv) biotransformation applyied on / or using carbohydrates
(v) Biological aspects: carbohydrate antigens; blood group substances aso.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The chemical aspects of carbohydrate transformations will be correlated with structure and function. Therefore basic considerations concerning solution structures and stereochemistry will beelaborated. Additionally, selected problems in carbohydrate synthesis and biochemical transformations as well es biological interactions will be presented.
