Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Development of new methods for the measurement of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in environmental samples. Natural radionuclides like Rn-222, Ra-226, Ra-228, Pb-210, Po-210 and the uranium isotopes are measured in Austrian tap-waters as well as in mineral waters to get an overview about the doses to the public due to drinking water take-up. On aerosols, the long-lived radon progeny Pb-210 and its daughter products are measured in order to calculate aerosol residence times.Investigation of naturally occurring organic chelating ligands ( humic and fulvic acids) which serve as important trace metal carriers in river waters.Extraction of heavy metals from waste water using a new class of extracting agents based on the concept of functionalized hydrophobic ionic liquids.
Assessment and permitted materials
Presentation during the seminar, written exam at the end of the course
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Discussion of currently treated topics in the environmental chemistry and radio chemistry group
Examination topics
the students will be trained to work independently on a selected theme from the field of environmental chemistry and radiochemistry; diploma and PhD students present their forthcoming studies and results.
