Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
Students will get to know all steps of the analytical process in a modern setting, using a concrete example from current research. As traditional laboratory work is sometimes no longer common, meaningful, or feasible nowadays, the course takes place exclusively online or in a seminar room. Various modern digital methods are utilized for the practical part, such as videos, simulators, remote control of a mass spectrometer, or even augmented reality. The students are shown how modern analytical chemistry can be put into practice in a digitized world.
Upon successful completion of the course, students are capable of planning, executing, evaluating, and interpreting a simple analysis using an inorganic mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).

Contents:
The course is divided into a theoretical part, where necessary knowledge is conveyed, and a practical part, which serves to deepen the acquired knowledge and gain practical experiences.
• Planning of an experiment
• Handling of mass spectrometers, optimization of various relevant instrument and method parameters
• Quantitative mass spectrometric analysis of complex samples
• Data evaluation for analyte quantification
• Calculation of various parameters for quality control

Method:
The course contents will be covered through lectures, practical exercises, presentations, discussions, and oral presentations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment criteria:
• Mandatory attendance, practical work (continuous assessment course)
• In-time submission of the lab reports

To ensure good scientific practice, the students may be invited to a grade-relevant final discussion, which must be successfully completed.

Permitted aids:
• Practical part: Laptop/Tablet/Smartphone, calculator, periodic table
• Final discussion: Calculator, periodic table

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
• Attendance at the first meeting is mandatory.
• The attendance in the practical part must be 80%.
• Each partial performance must be completed by the end of the course.

Assessment criteria:
• Participation
• Quality of the practical work, including responsible handling of samples, instruments, and resources.
• Quality of the data analysis
• Quality of the presentations
• Quality of the reports
