Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Discussion of selected advanced spectrometric methods, starting at the wavelength range of NMR spectroscopy (app. 1m) and going to -spectroscopy ( app. 10-14m), quality assurance for wine by 13C-NMR and 1H/2D isotopic ratio, testing of materials and medical applications of NMR-tomography, ESR-spectroscopy, defect structures, F-centres, detection of irradiated foodstuffs, microwave spectroscopy, interstellar matter, isotopic analysis in cosmogenesis, analytical applications of laser technology in atomic spectroscopy (AAS, LIBS and LA-AES resp., LEAFS) and molecular spectroscopy (PAS, TLS, LIF, LPF, SERS) in environmental analysis to detect heavy metals, halogenated or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, down to single molecules, Mößbauer spectroscopy, isomeric shift, quadrupole splitting, specification.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral examination on appointment.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Oral examination. Three questions asked. To pass, students have to correctly answer at least 50% of all (sub)questions. Above that, linear scale applies.

Examination topics

Innovative spectroscopic strategies and applications as set out in the material available on Moodle. Slides must be complemented by own notes or a textbook.
