Aims, contents and method of the course

After finishing this course, students are familiar with the basic concepts of thinking Natural Sciences at the state of the art and know their possibilitiesand limitations. Furthermore, the have gained scientifically based insight into the practical aspects of Natural Sciences and their applications in everyday life. Furthermore, they have gained insight into ethical and societal dimensions of the Natural Sciences.
In winter temr 2024 the topics will cover: Types of gaining knowledge in Natural Sciences (descriptive - measuring - modelling), the quantitative approach as the basis of natural sciences. Models as an approximation to reality (for instance ideal gas). The way to the globe and heliocentrism, gravitation; how sure can (Natural) Sciences know? Ecosystems and environmental cycles. Biomedicine: current and ethical aspects.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Exam on the lecture part
- Participation at the discussion/seminar part plus written seminar work
- Participation at and report on excursion(s).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Participating at course units is compulory, you may miss two units.
- The written exam on the lecture part accounts for 45% of the points.
- Participation at seminar and seminar report. 45% of the points.
- Participation at and short report on excursion(s): 10% of the points.

Students need to obtain at least 50% of the points to pass. Above that, the grades are given in a linear manner.
