Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The participants perform individual synthetic examples to broaden their practical skills in organic chemistry
The objective of the course is to improve the participants' knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry. A series of 11 individual synthetic steps will be performed to illustrate and practice typical working methods, as well as separation and purification procedures like extraction, distillation, chromatography, crystallization, and performing reactions under absolute conditions. Control of purity and/or characterization of isolated products will be done by physical and/or spectroscopic methods. For selected examples a literature search, including on-line information retrieval will be performed with the aim to evaluate, adapt, and apply known synthetic procedures.

Assessment and permitted materials

Preparation and characterization of 11 synthetic products. For each example working sheets, literature search and practical skills will be evaluated (maximum 18 pt per example). Additionally up to 8 points can be reached during a Moodle exam about safety related topics

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mandatory criteria for acceptance to the course: Lectures “Organische Chemie I” and “Chemisches Grundpraktikum II” as well as parallel registration for the “Proseminar in Organic Chemistry” are mandatory.

Recommened: Basic knowledge in spectroscopy, recommendation: “Molekülspektroskopische Übungen”

To pass the course it is necessary to obtain a minimum of 134 points (out of 200 in total). Grading key: 0-134 P = nicht genügend (5), 134-149 P = genügend (4), 150-167 = befriedigend (3), 168-184 = gut (2), 185-200 = sehr gut (1)

Examination topics

On working sheets to the examples the students are asked about techniques, methods and theoretical backgrounds necessary to work on the relevant tasks.
