Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture gives an overview about different methods used for preparation and thermodynamic characterization of inorganic materials. Materials, their nature, properties and applications as well as general problems of materials preparation and selected methods, which are not topic of other lectures in materials chemistry, will be discussed. The classical methods of thermal analysis, DTA (Differential Thermal Analysis), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis) will be presented. Furthermore we discuss the different methods used for the measurement of thermochemical properties. This will include calorimetry, vapour pressure measurements and EMF (Electro Motoric Force) measurements using solid and liquid electrolytes, respectively.
Assessment and permitted materials
Oral examination
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The students will obtain an overview about diferent inorganic materials, their constitution, preparation and application. The theoretical thermodynamic background of the most important methods for the thermochemical and thermoanalytical characterization of inorganic materials should be understood. Knowledge about experimental techniques, application and data interpretation will be given.
Examination topics
Lecture with possibility of open discussions. Some of the materials and products will be shown during the lecture
