Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Lipidomics is the science that deals with the concentration-dependent description of hydrophobic biomolecules in space and time in a specific system. This course will introduce you to the basic concept of shotgun lipidomics and will contain lectures but also hands-on work ranging from sample extraction over the analysis of different lipid classes to their identification and visualization within a given lipidome. More explicitly you will learn about the do and don’ts of lipid sample extraction, familiarize you to the concepts of bottom-up and top-down shotgun lipidomics, extract and analyze your own samples with direct infusion experiments, analyze your data with the latest software used in the field and compare your results across different experiments.
In this course, the following topics (areas) are presented: brief overview of lipid structure and function, lipid nomenclature, general lipidomics workflow including extraction and sample preparation, overview of lipid analysis, mass spectrometric methods and evaluation strategies for identification and quantification.
The contents of the courses are worked out through lectures, hands-on work, computational training, discussions, oral presentations of the achieved results, a protocol and an examination. Current publications of scientific literature with an analytical-chemical focus on shotgun lipidomics are discussed with the students. However, central focus of the course is the practical work around the shotgun lipidomics technique.

Assessment and permitted materials

Type of performance control:
• Participation in the discussion/ practical work
• Oral presentation of a chosen topic and of the obtained results
• Final evaluation (10 min individual discussions)
• Timely submission of a topic-specific protocol

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
Attendance of the first three days of the course is mandatory. The overall attendance must be 75% fulfilled.

To achieve a positive grade, 50% / 60% of the maximum possible number of points must be achieved.

Assessment standard
100 points can be achieved for this course. These are divided into:
• Engagement, discussion: 30 points
• Oral presentation and questions on the course work: 40 points
• Protocols and examination on the subject: 30 points (delivered 6 weeks after the end of the course, not more than five pages)

The grades are awarded according to the following point scheme:
• 1 (very good): 100 - 91 points
• 2 (good): 90-81 points
• 3 (satisfactory): 80-71 points
• 4 (sufficient): 70-61 points
• 5 (insufficient): 60-0 points
