Aims, contents and method of the course

AIMS
At the end of the course, students should:
- be familiar with the topics and techniques encompassed in Medicinal Chemistry
- understand structure-activity relationships studies and drug design strategies
- understand the drug development process for various drug modalities
- understand the underlying methods and concepts for drug discovery and development
- be aware of recent developments, challenges and controversies in the field
- be able to read, understand and critically evaluate articles in Medicinal Chemistry
- be able to apply the knowledge and skills learned to their master theses and in other situations

CONTENT
1. Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry
2. Methods and concepts underpinning Medicinal Chemistry
3. Overview of different drug targets
4. Overview of different drug classes and interactions
5. Small molecule drug discovery and development
6. Peptide drug discovery and development
7. Biologics and Nanoparticles
8. Vaccine development
9. Formulation and delivery technologies
10. Preclinical work, IP and commercialization strategies
11. Case studies

METHODS

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

ASSESSMENT
- attendance of at least 9 lectures is required to obtain a grade.
- 10% of the course grade will be based on participation during the course.
- 50% of the course grade will be based on exercises given during the course period.
- 40% of the course grade will be based on a final assessment to be done in students’ own time and submitted after the course ends.
- grades will be given as: (1) 100–90%, (2) 89–76%, (3) 75–64%, (4) 63–50%, (5) 49–0%
