Aims, contents and method of the course
Introduction to nucleic acid biotechnology with an emphasis on understanding the scientific foundations of the technology. Topics include: Chemical synthesis of oligonucleotides, gene synthesis, backbone and base modifications, microarrays and sequencing, DNA-based data storage, extension of the genetic alphabet, DNA and RNA therapeutics. We will also study in detail the structure and function of DNA and RNA, as well as current and modern analytical methods in the field of nucleic acids.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written and oral reports and participation in discussions.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Understanding the synthesis and properties of natural and modified nucleic acids and their roles in biotechnology.
Examination topics
Mix of interactive lecture and reading and discussion of relevant articles and reviews.
