Aims, contents and method of the course

Structure of matter - historical developments; symmetry in solids; symmetry in crystallography: crystallographic symmetry operations as affine transformations; group theory for symmetry operations (group axioms, group-subgroup relations, group connectivity diagram); crystallographic point groups and space group types; subgroups and supergroups, normal subgroups, coset and conjugacy. Calculation of space group symmetry from given Hermann-Mauguin space group symbol. Black and White groups, Black and White Bravais lattices, Black and White point groups (crystal classes), Theorem of Zamorzayev; calculation of Black and White point groups. Application to magnetic structures.
The lecture is accompanied by a various exercises and training programs.
Prerequisites: Mathematics I, II; Physical Chemistry V.
Examination(IP): written test.
