Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students are familiar with the spectrum of analytical methods used in Earth Sciences. They know the physical and chemical basis of the different analytical methods and know about their application potential in Earth Sciences. In particular the students are familiar with electron microscopy and electron-microbeam analytical techniques, with analytical methods employing X-rays including X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and X-ray tomography, the methods in the spectroscopic investigation of solids, mass spectrometry using gas source, thermal ionization and plasma sources. Furthermore, they know methods in environmental analytics such as liquid- and gas chromatography and some field based analytical procedures.
The students gain practical experience with scanning electron microscopy. They can tune the electron beam and produce electron-optical images using SE and BSE detectors independently. Moreover, they can use energy dispersive methods for elemental analysis on the SEM.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course comprises pi and npi parts, examination and course assessment follows the rules for pi courses.
1) There are three examinations during the semester including
Di 19.11.2019 electron microscopy/X-ray methods max 40 points
Di 10.12.2019 spectroscopy of solids max 20 points
Di 21.1.2020 mass spectrometry, environmental isotopes max 40 points
The exams will be held during the same hours and at the same location as the course. It is the student’s responsibility to check for time collisions with other activities in their studies in due time.
2) On Mo 3.2.2020, 13:15 pm, room 2B204 an additional date for taking one examination that has been missed due to illness or an other important reason will be offered. People interested in this extra examination date need to sign up till 28.1.2020 and specify which one oft the three examinations they want to take.
3) Signing out of the course independently is possible till the end of the registration period.

Unjustified absence during an examination leads to assignment of 0 points.
The practical exercise (pi part) comprising 2 SSt practical on the scanning electron microscope will be organized in small groups on fixed dates during the semester. The organization of the groups will be done during the npi-lecture on 8.10.2019.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For passing this course a minimum of 50 points out of a total of maximum 100 points must be reached in a cumulative manner.

Attendance is obligatory for the first three npi units. If the attendance is less then 66% the student will be excluded from the course. Exceptions from this rule are only possible, when there are defendable reasons for the lack of attendance.

Attendance is obligatory for the practical exercises (pi part). For passing the practical course an attendance of at least 80% must be documented.

For passing the course the student has to pass both the pi as well as the npi parts.
