Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, you will build upon the basics of sedimentology and stratigraphy typically acquired at Bachelor’s level. You will be able to classify clastic sediments under the microscope and interpret them, including diagenetic features of sedimentary rocks with regard to reservoir properties. You will become proficient with sediment profile interpretation, especially with regard to basin development and analysis. You will learn to work with virtual outcrop models on a range of sedimentary environments, and emphasis is placed on practical interpretation. The approaches to stratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, lithostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy, and their practical applications will be explored. Furthermore, the biomarker concept, the connection between the geosphere and the biosphere using molecular fossils will be developed, and their application to biogeochemical processes and environmental conditions.
