Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents:
Structural building blocks and chemical bonds
Principles of local and long-distance order
Structure types and structural relationships
Real structures of crystals
Selected chapters on the crystal chemistry of geomaterials

Module targets: The students know the principles of solid-state chemical composition of crystals, the crystal chemistry of inorganic crystals and their three-dimensional atomic or molecular long-range order. You can independently differentiate between the structural-chemical principles of order and structural topologies, give an overview of the structural variations, display them graphically, and interpret stereochemical characteristics. They know the various characteristics in the real structure of minerals and crystals such as lattice defects, defects, inclusions, and effects lattice defects on important physical and chemical properties. They are able to describe and interpret processes of alteration. Knowledge of the information content of internal textures is imparted.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course is completed in the form of a module examination according to the pi rules. For this purpose, two written partial performances are to be evaluated according to a point system in the following complexes:

(1) Structures of crystalline matter
(2) Real structure of crystalline matter

In this case, 19 points can be achieved for each part (answering questions).

As a third partial performance, a maximum of 4 points (each) are awarded for a protocol for the independent calculation and application of bond strengths (deadline 07.01.2021) of a given crystal structure and the preparation and presentation of a short lecture (14.01.2021) about this crystal structure.

The two written partial services will take place if agreed on 28.01.2021 at 14:30 in room 2B382.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is aimed at all students of earth sciences and related natural sciences. Explicit previous knowledge is not mandatory, however, basic knowledge in crystallography is recommended.

The course is assessed as positive if a total of at least 23.5 points (i.e. more than half of the total achievable points) have been achieved in all three parts.

Evaluation:
23.5-28.5 points grade 4
29,0-34.0 points grade 3
34.5-40.0 points grade 2
40.5-46,0 points grade 1

Unjustified absence for a partial service is valuated with 0 points.
It is possible to perform/repeat a partial service.

Examination topics
