Star formation is triggered by a gravitational collapse of an interstellar cloud but numerous physical processes like fragmentation, magnetic braking, shock waves, radiative transfer as well as ambipolar diffusion are necessary to form stars. The second part of the lecture deals with the formation of Earth- as well as Jupiter-like planets and brown dwarfs within protostellar disks. The results are confronted with recent observations of extrasolar planets
