Aims, contents and method of the course

Using examples from numerical astronomy the course gives an introduction into scientific programming. The programming language of the course is Fortran which still is widely used in astrophysics. The programming will be done on a Unix (Linux) operating system. Examples encompass optimization, solution of ODEs and PDEs, visualization of scientific data, as well as extragalactic astronomy (galaxy evolution simulations by means of grid-based hydrodynamical codes).
