Aims, contents and method of the course

* Thermodynamic systems, thermodynamic variables. Experimentally-derived gas laws: Gay-Lussac, Charles, Boyle, ideal gas law. Kinetic theory of heat, relationship to the ideal gas law. Mixture of gases: Dalton's law. Atmospheric composition. Virtual temperature.
* Work, energy, Joule's law, enthalpy. First law of thermodynamics. Thermal capacities. Adiabatic transformations, potential temperature, adiabatic lapse rate. Carnot cycle. Entropy, second law of thermodynamics. Free energy.
* Properties of water. Equilibrium phase transformations, latent heat. Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Saturated vapor pressure. Humidity variables. Saturated adiabatic lapse rate.
* Vertical structure of the atmosphere. Gravity, geopotential. Hydrostatic balance. Hypsometric equation and applications. Buoyancy, equation of motion for small vertical displacements, Brunt-Vaisala frequency. Static stability criteria.
* Thermodynamic diagrams. Conditional & convective instability. Convective available potential energy, convective inhibition.
