Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course discusses the qualitative features of the surface layer (SL) and of the boundary layer (BL), i.e., the tropospheric layers nearest to the ground, as determined by the surface energy balance and by the dynamics of atmospheric turbulence. The description of the properties of the SL and BL with scaling laws obtained from dimensional analysis is a central argument. The representation of the SL and BL in numerical weather prediction and climate models is also discussed.
Assessment and permitted materials
Oral exam, 3 questions, approximately 45 minutes.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Demonstrated understanding of processes in the atmospheric boundary layer and of micrometeorological phenomena.
