Aims, contents and method of the course

**IMPORTANT NOTE**
The development of Covid-19 during the upcoming semester cannot be foreseen at the moment. If new restrictions are introduced, the planned lecture schedule, the administration of exams and the mode of evaluation may have to be adapted. Students will be informed as soon as possible about any changes that may become necessary.

The course describes the impact of mountains on the atmosphere on spatial scales ranging from synoptic to micro. The
course prioritizes theoretical arguments, but examples of field observations in mountainous terrain are presented
throughout. Topics include: lee cyclogenesis, mountain waves, foehn, thermally-driven breeze systems, orographic precipitation, boundary-layer processes over complex orography.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam, 3 questions, approximately 45 minutes.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Demonstrated ability to describe and discuss the basic mechanisms of mountain weather phenomena.
Grading system:
- Flawless performance during the oral test: 1.
- Minor mistakes and/or imprecise statements: 2.
- Major mistakes in 1 out of 3 questions: 3.
- Major mistakes in 2 out of 3 questions: 4.
