On the ground of appropriate examples, this course discusses methods and strategies of data acquisition with modern analytical equipment and their transformation in useful petrological data. Contents: The starting point: micro-textural and paragenetic information; Definition of objectives; Setting-up strategies for microprobe point, profile and image analysis; Judging the quality of analytical data; Analytical and other uncertainties; Crystal chemical criteria, formula and endmember calculation; Projection techniques; Treating XRF analytical data: bivariate oxide-oxide plots and rock classification; Choice of appropriate methods for trace element analysis; Use of REE and trace element diagrams.
