Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals: Knowledge of physical properties of galaxies, their cosmological evolution, and formation scenarios.
Contents: Local Universe, Large-Scale Structure like groups and clusters, interactions / transformations, surveys, galaxy evolution, galaxy formation.
Methods: lectures, exercises with beamer presentations or blackboard calculations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Exam (Multiple Choice) at end of lecture time, solution of weekly exercise sheets, presence in exercise groups. No tools are allowed for the exam. No AI tools allowed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade is computed as follows:
50% exam (Grade 1-5, grading scheme is shown below). To successfully complete the lecture it is mandatory to pass the exam (grade 4 or better).
30% presentations in exercise groups in teams of 2 students each; grades 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 or 3.
20% solutions of weekly exercise sheets (grades 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5), presence in exercise groups. If a student is absent without an excuse, the exercise grade is degraded by one, e.g. from 2 to 3.
All partial requirements have to be fulfilled. No tools (except a pen) are allowed for the exam. For students who fail to pass the exam we will conduct a second exam.
Grading scheme for exam:
below 45% -> grade 5
45% - 58.75% -> grade 4
58.75% - 72.5% -> grade 3
72.5% - 86.25% -> grade 2
86.25% - 100.0% -> grade 1
