Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This semester, we will investigate the rotation of stellar objects across the Hertzsprung-Russell-diagram (HRD). Rotation significantly influences astrophysical processes like pulsation, diffusion, convection, and mass loss. For example, we know of many classes of stars for which we can directly measure the rotational speed due to spots on their surfaces. The International Variable Star Index (VSX; https://www.aavso.org/vsx/) includes about 200 000 objects of these types. We extract the objects and use several different sources of astrophysical parameters to derive the HRD for these objects. Then, we will perform a sound statistical analysis. In the course, you will learn the basic fundamental aspects of stellar formation and evolution. Then, we will show you how to retrieve data from the commonly used database and analyse the results standardly. The final step will be to write a scientific paper, which will be submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics.
