Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The objective of this course is to provide an overview of various topical issues related to dwarf galaxy research.

The course will cover the following topics:

- main types of dwarf galaxies in the local universe (dwarf spheroidals, dwarf ellipticals, nucleated dwarf ellipticals, ultra-compact dwarfs, ultra-faint dwarfs, dwarf irregulars, blue compact dwarf galaxies): structural, morphological and chemical characteristics
- the star formation history of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group as inferred from color-magnitude diagram studies
- dwarf galaxy evolution in galaxy clusters
- extremely metal-deficient dwarf galaxies and their importance in the context of galaxy evolution studies and observational cosmology
- Seyfert activity in dwarf galaxies
- origin and implications of starburst activity in blue compact dwarf galaxies and green peas
- production and escape of Lyman continuum and Lyman-alpha radiation in low-mass starburst galaxies near and far

Übungen
- modeling of single-fiber SDSS spectra of quiescent and star-forming dwarf galaxies with the population synthesis codes Starlight and FADO
- computation of continuum-subtracted Halpha images and Halpha equivalent width maps for star-forming dwarf galaxies & estimation of their star formation rate
- spectral modeling of integral field spectroscopy data for star-forming dwarf galaxies from the CALIFA survey: stellar age patterns, emission-line ratio diagnostics and ionization parameter mapping.
