Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The objective of this course is to provide an overview of various
topical issues related to the starburst phenomenon and its role on the galaxy assembly and chemical enrichment history.
The course will cover the following topics:
- theoretical predictions on the spectrophotometric and chemical evolution of starburst galaxies
- the evolving multi-phase interstellar medium in starburst galaxies
- starburst-driven super-shells & galactic winds: theoretical concepts and multi-wavelength (X-ray through radio continuum) observations
- studies of the star formation history of starburst galaxies with color-magnitude diagrams, resolved stellar clusters, and evolutionary and population spectral synthesis models
- the ionized gas component in starburst galaxies: spatial, kinematical, spectroscopic properties and chemical abundance patterns
- interaction-induced starburst activity: IR-luminous- and ultraluminous infrared galaxies, tidal dwarf galaxies
- starburst activity in compact galaxy groups and galaxy clusters
- starbursts in isolated galaxies: blue compact galaxies and green peas
- extremely metal-deficient star-forming galaxies in the nearby universe as local analogs of high-redshift proto-galaxies
- the connection between starbursts, accretion-powered nuclear activity and the assembly history of galaxies and their structural components
- production and escape of Lyman continuum and Lyman-alpha radiation from starburst galaxies
- starburst activity in the early universe: theory and observations
