Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course begins with a description of the homogeneous Universe (expansion, thermal history) and an introduction of the main parameters that characterise the cosmological standard model. Then, we will look at the inhomogeneous matter distribution and study the evolution of large-scale structure in the Universe. The goal of the cosmological part of the lecture course is the mass function of bound structures (dark-matter halos). It will be shown how this depends on the parameters of the cosmological model and how it can be used to constrain the values of the parameters. In the second part of the course it will be shown how the mass function can be measured through observations of clusters of galaxies. A variety of methods to measure masses of clusters will be looked at (galaxy kinematics, X-ray gas, gravitational lensing) as will be various other properties of these objects. The course will be held in the form of a lecture with exercises (mostly computational exercises) every two weeks.
Assessment and permitted materials
At the start of each lecture students will briefly summarise the contents of the previous lecture. Open questions and problems of comprehension shall be mentioned openly.Every other week one hour will be dedicated to exercises, which will be prepared and presented by the students. If it is possible to hold it in the seminar room there will an exam (closed book, hand-written cheat sheet permitted) at the last date. If this is not possibe an online oral exam will be held.
