Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Tests of the concordance cold dark matter model on the scale of galaxies are so far inconclusive due to our poor understanding of the interplay between baryons and dark matter. This seminar introduces critical ingredients to disentangle the baryonic and dark matter distributions in galaxies: two-dimensional, spatially complete and radially extended kinematics to infer the total mass distribution, as well as coverage in wavelength to robustly constrain the baryonic mass distribution and isolate the dark matter contribution. The students will also learn about data archives and visualisation tools as well as practice their presentation skills. The course is suitable for PhD and MSc students in Astronomy.
Assessment and permitted materials
The assessment will be based on active participation, i.e., contributing to the discussions through asking questions and providing input via exercises and an informal presentation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The seminars are in English. A minimum participation of 75% is required as well as at least one informal presentation.
Examination topics
Current research topics in the field of extragalactic astrophysics with focus on the interplay between baryons and dark matter in galaxies.
Reading list
Potential reading materials will be suggested during the lectures.
