Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar, students will learn to work with both historical and modern scientific texts in astrophysics, identify relevant sources, and apply appropriate research methods. The focus will not only be on the content analysis of these texts but also on the historical, societal, and scientific contexts in which they were written.

Special attention will be given to the development of astrophysical concepts, the working conditions of researchers, and the societal impact of scientific discoveries. Additionally, using archival materials from the institute, we will explore how access to knowledge and scientific communication has evolved over the centuries.

Assessment and permitted materials

Based on the PI-charakter of the seminar the grading is based on different parts and their weighting:

- attendance (at least 75% to be positive graded, not taken into grading)
- participation on group discussion (20 %)
- presentation (40 %)
- written summary of the own work (40 %; will be checked for plagiarism with Turnitin)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading system:
Very good > 87.5 points
Good > 75 points
Satisfactory > 62.5 points
Sufficient > 50 Points
Not Sufficient > 0 Points
