Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar provides the students with the opportunity of working on a wide range of themes and questions of research, encompassing narratives and representations of the city in art, literature and movies that contribute to the generation of myth relating to cities or urban neighborhoods. The content of the seminar also includes newly emerging ‘myths’ used in city-marketing, in planning schemes of new developed urban precincts and in planning and promoting public spaces.
The seminar provides room for analyzing and discussing contemporary as well as visionary planning concepts in and of cities. Urban agendas such as ‘festivalization’ and ‘disneyfication’ of cities, ‘identity’ and ‘belonging’, or the quality and ambience of public spaces relate the myth of cities to planning practices.
The seminar is organized as a ‘workshop’. This didactic concept is supposed to allow an individual and continuous supervision and support of the student’s contributions. The students are given two options to choose from: To work on specified topics or to elaborate and follow individual research interests within the given overall thematic context of the seminar. Due to these alternives, the seminar shall enable students to develop a Bachelor-Thesis in the field of urban research and development.
